Agricultural Research and Food Sciences: University of Hohenheim Remains Germany’s #1

28-Jun-2019 - Germany

Research ranking by National Taiwan University (NTU-Ranking) again confirms top position in Germany, 6th place in Europe, and 20th place worldwide.

At the top for the sixth time in a row: The National Taiwan University (NTU) ranking once again confirms that the University of Hohenheim has the highest level of agricultural and food science research in Germany. Last Monday, the NTU Subject Ranking for 2019 was published. Throughout Europe, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart is ranked 6th and in the worldwide comparison it is 20th. It therefore continues to be Germany's number 1 in this field in all four relevant rankings.

The most important international research rankings are in agreement: The University of Hohenheim is Germany's top university in agricultural research, food, and nutrition science. This was confirmed by the National Taiwan University’s (NTU) current subject ranking last week.

The NTU has been evaluating international scientific publications for the ranking since 2012. It examines the number and quality of scientific publications in a total of 24 subjects. The subject Agricultural Sciences also includes Food Science & Technology and Nutrition & Dietetics. Only the 500 best universities worldwide are published.

The Best Global Universities Ranking by the journal U.S. News & World Report and the QS Ranking also see the University of Hohenheim as the leader in agricultural research in Germany:

  •  The influential QS World University Ranking by Subject lists the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food science 1st in Germany, 8th in Europe, and 15th worldwide. Quacquarelli Symons, a British education provider, ranks the best universities according to research, academic reputation, and publications each year. The subject rankings were published in February 2019.
  • The current Best Global Universities Ranking places the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food and nutritional science 1st in Germany, 7th in Europe, and 25th in the world. The magazine “U.S. News & World Report” bases its subject ranking on an analysis of Thomson Reuters’ Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) on scientific publications and international reputation. It was published in the fall of 2018.

  • In the analysis by the CWUR World University Rankings, the University of Hohenheim was the only university in Germany to achieve two top ten rankings in the area of agricultural sciences. Both in plant production and horticulture, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked the University 7th worldwide. The Center for World University Rankings published its first and so far only evaluation for individual scientific subjects in April 2017.

International cooperation links the best universities

We're even better together: The University of Hohenheim has cooperated closely with Wageningen and Copenhagen as the best universities in the Netherlands and Denmark within the Euroleague of Life Sciences. The network is made up of joint study programs and intensive exchange of students and instructors.

The University of Hohenheim is also connected to the University of Wageningen via the European Bioeconomy University. This initiative brings together six leading universities in the bioeconomy to promote a sustainable economy in Europe.

The University also cooperates closely with the top universities abroad. For example, the University of Hohenheim and the China Agricultural University have cooperated for several decades.
Hohenheim researchers are also cooperating with the Chinese Jiangnan University in the German-Chinese network Food4Health.
