German group sees less cocoa in Nutella colour shift

08-Nov-2017 - Germany

If you've found your jar of Nutella is looking lighter these days, a German consumer protection agency may have found out why.

Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg e. V.

"Since the colour of the new Nutellas is brighter, we assume that more milk powder was added at the expense of cocoa," Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg said on its Facebook page.

"Cocoa slipped back in the list of ingredients," the group said, adding that the company that makes the creamy spread, Ferrero, doesn't have to list the exact amount of cocoa and some other ingredients.

According to the ingredient list, Nutella now contains 8.7 per cent powdered milk, up from a previous 7.5 per cent.

Ferrero said on Monday that the change was just minor adjustment similar to regular alterations made at other brands.

Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg said sugar makes up 56.3 per cent of the creme, up from 55.9 per cent.

Sugar and fat together make up more than 87 per cent.

"Nutella remains a sugar-Fat Cream," the Hamburg consumer centre said.(dpa)
