Lid coding on a traversing axis in a Waldner filling system

For filling and packaging different types of CAFFREDDO, SCHWÄLBCHEN invested in a Waldner Dosomat round-table machine, which had to be equipped with an innovative marking system, specially tailored to the needs of the dairy industry, for printing the necessary production data on the lids of the coffee cups on a traversing axis.

After searching the market for suitable coding systems, the dairy contacted Domino to find out more about its expertise in this field.

Effective trial with the Domino A520i XS inkjet coder leads to success

SCHWÄLBCHEN´s requirements were clearly defined:

The system had to have high IP protection for humid production environments, intuitive operation and low operating costs.

Johannes Braun, Deputy Maintenance Manager at SCHWÄLBCHEN, explains how the cooperation with regionally based marking equipment manufacturer Domino came about: “We contacted Domino and asked for a trial. The relevant sales staff responded immediately and organized the trial we wanted within a week. After the trial had been running reliably and without any issues over a four-week period and based on the excellence service, we decided to purchase the A520i XS inkjet coder.”

The A520i inkjet coder is designed for humid room environments, which is generally the case in the food and dairy , and has a stainless steel housing with an electronics casing sealed according to protection class IP66 which, combined with the innovative airflow cooling system, provides consistent performance in any production environment, regardless of the air temperature and humidity.

The innovative inkjet system was integrated on a traversing axis with signal connection into the Waldner Dosomat (four-lanes) rotary filler and has been operating five days a week ever since.

It is marking every coffee cup lid with two lines of coding (18 characters), comprising the best-before date, the date and time of filling and other production-specific details.

Four cup lids are marked every cycle. The trigger and speed signal is effected via the axis.

Integrated pressure suppression ensures that cups with quality defects are not marked, facilitating clear identification and discharge.

“We are very happy with the A520i XS inkjet printer´s performance – it is reliable and the fact that you can position the TouchPanel anywhere along the production line has proved to be extremely beneficial for us,” continues Johannes Braun.

In addition to his high quality standards for production, the innovative A520i inkjet also incorporates commitment to the environment because it incurs extremely low overall operating costs, is virtually maintenance free and requires only minimal operator intervention.

Furthermore, the TouchPanel with the QuickStep user interface offers intuitive operation, which means fewer input errors.

Successful cooperation with added value

The inkjet system has now been successfully operating over six months and its performance is helping SCHWÄLBCHEN meet its own high quality expectations.

“We have been impressed by the individual project planning, performance and construction of the A520i, together with the quality and rapid-response support from Domino,” concludes Johannes Braun.
