Horticultural products should be of high quality, come from environmentally friendly cultivation and be affordable for the consumer. Vegetable plants are the basis of many high-quality foods that taste good and are healthy; ornamental plants make a decisive contribution to the daily well-being of many people. The Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) develops the scientific basis for the ecologically sound and effective production of horticultural crops. Our aim is to serve the environment, the competitiveness of horticulture and the needs of consumers. We work together with universities, other research institutions and practical enterprises, also beyond the borders of Germany and Europe. The Institute's current most successful research focuses are vegetable production in the open field and greenhouse as well as plant propagation and seed cultivation research for ornamental plants.
