Reverence for life was Albert Schweitzer's guiding maxim, to which the Albert Schweitzer Foundation for our environment is also committed. In order to implement the resulting mandate for action, we concentrate on the area in which humans cause by far the most suffering and death: the use of animals and animal products as food. In countries like Germany, it is not necessary for a healthy diet to allow animals to suffer and die for the production of food. That is why we promote the vegan diet as the best ethical solution at present. Its widespread adoption is a lengthy process that may require intermediate steps, which we welcome. This also includes reducing meat consumption and a vegetarian diet. As an end to the use of animals as a source of food is currently not in sight, we are also working towards less torturous breeding, keeping and killing of animals. To maximize the impact of our work, we use scientific findings to develop campaigns with a leverage effect, which primarily encompass the areas of business and consumer information as well as law and politics. At all levels, we work with the relevant stakeholders to take practical steps towards respectful treatment of animals and also make it easier for supposed opponents to abandon previous patterns of action. As it is impossible for a single foundation to implement this alone, we cooperate with organizations that pursue compatible goals. We are a heterogeneous team in which different backgrounds enrich each other and develop potential. Our work is made possible by donations, which we see as investments by people who want to bring about the greatest possible change in the way we treat so-called farm animals. We therefore strive for the greatest possible effectiveness and work efficiently. Our work should also contribute to a more respectful treatment of animals and ultimately all life.
