The Max Rubner Institute, Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food, was founded on January 1, 2008. Its research focuses on consumer health protection in the food sector. The determination and nutritional-physiological evaluation of health-relevant ingredients in food, the investigation of gentle, resource-conserving methods of processing and treatment, the quality assurance of plant and animal foods as well as the investigation of sociological parameters of nutrition and the improvement of nutritional information are important areas of research. The Max Rubner Institute emerged from the Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food (BfEL), which was only established in 2004. The BfEL was formed in 2004 by merging the Federal Institutes for Milk Research in Kiel, for Cereal, Potato and Fat Research in Detmold and Münster, for Meat Research in Kulmbach and the Federal Research Institute for Nutrition in Karlsruhe, as well as a part of the Federal Research Institute for Fisheries in Hamburg ("Fish Quality"). In addition to the headquarters in Karlsruhe, the Max Rubner Institute now has sites in Kiel, Detmold and Kulmbach.
