About SCHWEIZER TIERSCHUTZ STS

Swiss Animal Protection SAP is the umbrella organization of 69 cantonal and regional animal protection societies in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Founded in 1861, it is the oldest and largest animal protection organization operating throughout Switzerland. It is an active member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals WSPA, a member of the Eurogroup for Animals and the Fur Free Alliance FFA. The efforts of Swiss Animal Protection SAP are aimed at promoting the humane treatment of animals. SAP combats cruelty to animals as a result of ignorance, thoughtlessness or the pursuit of monetary gain. It aims to make the general public aware of the need to keep animals under appropriate conditions that fullfill their basic needs. SAP campaigns for stricter laws and proper implementation of the Animal Protection Regulations. To this end, it seeks constructive cooperation with the appropriate authorities. At the same time, it has set aside special funds to support the work of its local chapters and their animal shelters. Swiss Animal Protection SAP is based in Basel and has over 30 employees. It maintains special units for pet animals, wild animals, farm animals, animals used for experiments and genetic engineering, a veterinary advisory service and an advisory service for legal questions relating to animal welfare. Particular emphasis is also placed on involving young people in animal protection through the SAP kid’s club Krax and the emplyment of an animal welfare teacher, who promotes animal protection ideas in schools. The Swiss Animal Protection SAP Inspection Service, which is accredited by the Swiss Government, monitors livestock husbandry for animal friendly label organizations, animal transport and slaughter houses, which adher to higher requirements than the official animal welfare regulations
