Not just beer and brats: Germany now boasts 300 Michelin restaurants

15-Nov-2017 - Germany

The country best known for beer and bratwurst can, as of Tuesday, pride itself on bypassing the 300 mark for the number of restaurants that have earned at least one coveted star in the 2018 Michelin Guide for Germany.

Atelier in Munich, run by the 35-year-old Jan Hartwig, became the country's 11th holder of three stars, the highest rating awarded.

The number of two-star establishments rose to 39, thanks to four new additions, and 250 eateries are now currently holders of one star.

However, even with its one freebie - a hard-to-reach one-star restaurant in the Austrian Alps being counted in the German guide - Germany still falls far behind fine-dining meccas such as France, with some 600 Michelin-rated restaurants, and Japan, which boasts more than 30 three-starred eateries.

Last year's Michelin Guide for Germany previously contained 292 starred restaurants. The country received its first stars from the French guide, considered the "bible for gourmands," in 1966. (dpa)
