Needles hidden inside strawberries prompts official Australian probe

17-Sep-2018 - Australia

Reports of consumers finding sewing needles inserted inside strawberries across Australia have prompted a government investigation. Health Minister Greg Hunt said Monday he has ordered the food safety authority to investigate the cases, which have been reported in six of Australia's eight states and territories.

The first reports last week came from Queensland, prompting several brand recalls. The reports of similar cases in five other states has prompted fears of copycat behaviour. At least one man has been taken to hospital after eating a strawberry with a needle inside.

"This is a very vicious crime and it's a general attack on the public," Hunt told Australian broadcaster ABC on Monday.

"We have also tasked the federal agency to investigate whether there are supply chain weaknesses, whether there are actions that we can take to assist the police, whether there are systemic changes which are required," Hunt said.

State police are also investigating, but no suspects have been identified. The Queensland state government has already offered a 100,000-Australian-dollar (72,000-US-dollar) reward for information. (dpa)
