Starbucks Commits To Reserve Roastery In Tokyo

24-Oct-2016 - USA

Starbucks coffee Co. said Thursday that it plans to open a Reserve Roastery in Japan in 2018. This will be the coffee giant's fourth Roastery location globally.

The new location will be located in Tokyo's upscale Nakameguro district, known for its exclusive boutiques and art galleries. It will be designed in collaboration with architect Kengo Kuma, founder of Kuma Lab at the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Olympics 2020 designer.

Starbucks opened its first Reserve Roastery in Seattle in 2014, which according to the company is the most successful store opening in its history. The company has announced plans to open new Roastery locations in Shanghai in 2017 and New York in 2018.

"As it was when we opened Japan as our first market outside of North America in 1996, the country continues to be an important and dynamic coffee community for Starbucks. We are proud to bring our customers a distinct, immersive and innovative retail experience that celebrates the craft of coffee in an unprecedented way," said Howard Schultz, chairman and chief executive officer of Starbucks.

This is Starbucks second design collaboration with Kuma, who had earlier designed the Starbucks store in Fukuoka, Japan. The new Tokyo Roastery will infuse Japanese design in a space that will pay tribute to coffee artistry and craft.

The new location, with 13,000 square feet space, will provide customers with an environment where they can appreciate and understand the craft of roasting and brewing some of the most unique coffees from around the world.

At the Roastery, customers will be able to connect with Starbucks coffee specialists and master roasters, as well as enjoy a curated selection of handcrafted beverages. This Roastery will also include artisan food and breads baked onsite by acclaimed Italian food purveyor, Princi.

The opening of the Roastery marks an important growth opportunity for Starbucks in the China and Asia Pacific region. More than 20 million customers visit over 6,200 Starbucks stores across 16 markets in the region each week. (dpa)
