Cup cakes are increasingly popular breakfast

26-Sep-2018 - Germany

Mug Cakes' have become increasingly popular as a quick, convenient and delicious snack in recent years. The ingredients for a cup cake are mixed in a cup; the dough is then baked in the microwave for a few minutes until it rises. Ready-made cup cake blends are now also available in retail stores. The breakfast market has recently received a lot of criticism - in terms of poor health and innovation. Cup cakes could offer a ray of hope here.

Breakfast biscuits can offer inspiration

Inspired by the high consumption of biscuits in Italy, Belvita has taken the world market by storm with breakfast biscuits launched in 2010. Belvita makes breakfast easy, offering valuable nutrients and fibre in a biscuit, and an ideal breakfast. Breakfast cake, on the other hand, has aroused less interest so far, but cup cake could offer a lot of potential.

Vegetables have potential

Vegetables as an ingredient could help position cup cakes as a healthy breakfast to appease concerns about sugar content. In fact, about half of British consumers are interested in cakes with vegetables such as courgettes or beetroot. Almost three quarters (73%) of Italian consumers, 70% of Spanish consumers and 69% of French consumers have concerns about the sugar content of cakes.

Saving time at breakfast is crucial

Time is a precious commodity and consumers are looking for foods that are fresh, nutritious and tasty, but cost little time to prepare. There are different cup cakes on the market with different preparation times. There are powdery products that still require the addition of ingredients such as milk, egg or water; liquid dough that does not require additives or mixing; products that require a cup to put the product into the microwave; products that are sold in a microwaveable cup; or products with plastic cutlery for eating 'on the go'. The more convenient a breakfast cake solution is, the more likely it is that consumers will include it in their repertoire.

BioTechUSA Protein Gusto Vanilla Flavoured Mug Cake has a high protein content (21g per serving) and contains stevia instead of sugar.

Condi Hazelnut Cup Cake is a baking mixture sold in France. The cake is ready in a minute in the microwave and includes a fork for eating 'on the go'.
