Snapp's Ferry Packing Recalls Ground Beef Over E.coli Risk

25-Jan-2016 - USA

Snapp's Ferry Packing Co. is recalling roughly 410 pounds of beef product due to potential contamination with the deadly bacterium E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food safety and Inspection Service has announced.

Packed in 5-lb. packages with a date of Nov. 20, 2015, the recalled ground beef bears establishment number "Est. 9085", and was distributed to restaurants in the Knoxville, Tennessee area. None of the recalled item was sold at retail.

The problem came to light on Jan. 19, 2016, when a positive result for E. coli O157:H7 from FSIS testing was traced back to the establishment as a result of an ongoing illness investigation in Tennessee.

E. coli O157:H7 can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and in the most severe cases, a type of kidney failure. This potentially deadly bacterium is estimated to cause at least 70,000 cases of infection each year in the U.S. (dpa)
