European Beer Star: start of the 2015 competition

10-Jun-2015 - Germany

The European beer Star is one of the most prominent, international beer competitions in the world. breweries from 42 countries entered over 1,600 beers in 2014. Winning an award in this competition run by Private Brauereien is almost like receiving a knighthood for brewers in Germany, in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Registration for the 2015 European Beer Star competition starts with a couple of new categories, although otherwise the successful concept basically remains unchanged.

The European Beer Star competition has been awarding prizes to the three best beers in different categories since 2004. As only the three best beers in each category win an award, European Beer Star one of the most fiercely contested competitions anywhere in the world. Although the competition is restricted to categories of beer, which have their traditional origins in Europe, breweries from anywhere in the world can participate – and an ever greater number are taking up the challenge. Some speciality segments have been added as new categories in 2015, particularly to reflect the growth of international craft beers. The new categories in 2015 are Belgian-Style Saison, Wood & Barrel Aged Sour Beer and Strong Smoke Beer. The fast growing IPA category has also been sub-divided: on the one hand, there are Traditional IPAs that use old types of British, Czech or German hops to develop their specific flavour. On the other hand, the New Style IPAs are primarily characterised by their fruity hop aromas.

Otherwise it remains by the tried-and-tested format which distinguishes the European Beer Star and clearly differentiates it from other competitions. The beers are tasted by an international committee of over 100 experts in the Doemens Academy. Only human senses count, there are no laboratory analyses, all beers are judged solely from the consumer's viewpoint. The winners then enter a second round of tasting for the Consumers‘ Favourite award. In this, all the beers that win a gold medal are offered to visitors for tasting and evaluation at the BrauBeviale Exhibition - one of the major international trade fairs for the bever Seite 2/2 age industry. These visitors then decide upon the important additional prize, namely the Consumers‘ Favourite.

The registration procedure runs until 31st August 2015, although those who register before 30th June 2015 benefit from an early booker discount. The expert tasting will be held in the Doemens Academy in October. The consumer tasting sessions and the glittering prize-giving ceremony will then be held at the BrauBeviale 2015 Exhibition in Nuremberg in November.
