McDonald's Tests Fresh, Never-frozen, Beef Patties In Some Restaurants

16-May-2016 - USA

In a big potential menu change in decades, McDonald's is testing hamburger patties made from fresh beef, instead of frozen ones, in some of its restaurants

The test is limited to Quarter Pounder patties in 14 restaurants in the Dallas area. These patties from freshly ground beef are used in burgers like Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Bacon Clubhouse and the Homestyle Burger, a regional burger in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The test has been going on since November. McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb said it's very premature to draw any conclusions.

Once successful, McDonald's rolling out fresh patties in its 14,000 locations in the U.S. would really be a massive undertaking.

As of now, McDonald's relies on its extensive network of suppliers who make, freeze, and ship beef patties to its restaurants in the US.

According to McComb, like all the tests, this one too is designed to see what works and what doesn't within its restaurants. The company would check the operational experience, consumer response, price points and other important information which may inform future decisions.

The latest move should please health advocates and customers, who were targeting fast-food chains for menus heavy on processed food and a lack of fresh options.

McDonald's has been conducting many experiments with its menu including new sizes of the Big Mac as well as  Gilroy Garlic Fries. (dpa)
