Emmi invests in the Suhr site, thus expanding 100 years of dairy tradition
The roots of the Suhr site go back to 1917, when the Suhr Butterzentrale was founded here. What started out as a headquarters for butter production has developed over the course of more than a century into one of the most important milk processing sites in Switzerland. This story has been continued for 20 years under the umbrella of Mittelland Molkerei Suhr. Emmi celebrated this anniversary on 28 August together with guests from the worlds of politics, agriculture, trade and the media. At the same time, two important investments for the future were inaugurated – the new West building and the new PET plant.
The Suhr site has always shaped what Emmi is all about: high-quality natural products for every day – produced with care, expertise and passion for Switzerland. More than 400 dedicated Emmi employees help produce milk, cream, mixed milk drinks, speciality milks and butter every day in Suhr. Foods that for many people are part of their everyday life and have to meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.
Future-proof orientation in line with consumer needs
Over the years, the site has developed from a traditional production facility into a versatile competence centre with a broad portfolio. With the new West building, Emmi is now making targeted investments in the future of the site and creating space for new technologies, processes and product solutions. The investment will make it possible to further develop the site and provide answers to future requirements from customers and consumers. A key component of this further development is the new PET plant – and at the same time a next logical step for Emmi in the area of sustainable packaging solutions.
Pioneering achievement by Emmi in the area of PET
Emmi was the first processor of dairy products in Switzerland to introduce white PET bottles as a packaging solution in 2024 – thus taking an important step towards recyclable packaging. This makes it possible to gradually switch packaging of dairy products to PET, thus using a recycling solution established in Switzerland. The Mittelland Molkerei Suhr brings to everyday life in Switzerland what began in Ostermundigen with Emmi Energy Milk and Emmi Caffè Latte Mr. Huge: with the new PET plant, Emmi is now also filling UHT and PAST milk in PET, with the changeover taking place gradually.
Functioning cycles can only emerge through collaboration across the entire value chain. Partners from recycling, PET Recycling Switzerland and trading partners play a crucial role here.
Exchange creates shared perspectives
As part of the anniversary event, the development of the site was highlighted and a look into the future was provided. A panel discussion focussed on consistent alignment with consumer needs, the importance of partnership-based collaboration and responsibility along the value chain. Afterwards, the guests were able to experience the site on guided tours and gain an exclusive insight into production, processes and new technologies.
